What is Medical Microneedling with SkinPen?

Medical Microneedling or “Collagen Induction Therapy” using the SkinPen device has completely revolutionized the treatment; rather than performing the treatment using a handheld dermaroller, SkinPen offers improved control, speed, and results. The device causes careful, controlled micro-injuries to the skin which trigger the body’s natural response to wound healing, resulting in the growth and remodelling of both collagen and elastin. Collagen & Elastin: The Skin’s Building Blocks Both collagen and elastin are foundational to healthy, youthful skin. Collagen keeps the skin firm, strong, and smooth, while elastin promotes flexibility, and elasticity, and keeps skin “bouncy”. As we age, the body starts producing less of these tissues and the skin begins to sag and wrinkle. 18 Similarly, the body’s response to traumatic injury via scarring can result in depleted collagen and elastin, which is why acne and traumatic scars are often indented.

 

The SkinPen Difference

Medical Microneedling with SkinPen involves the use of longer needles (.5 mm and longer) to stimulate the dermis, your skin’s deeper layers. The longer needles (up to 2.5 mm) reach the deep dermis, making it possible to treat wrinkles, acne and other scars by breaking up the irregular, thinned tissue and inducing skin remodelling. When performed by a licensed practitioner, there is minimal risk of infection, cross-contamination, scarring, and other complications.

 

Prior to Your Treatment At your consultation, we will discuss your skin concerns alongside your aesthetic goals. To minimize discomfort, your practitioner may apply a topical anesthetic (numbing cream) to the skin before the procedure. Please arrive at your appointment with clean skin and avoid waving, shaving, or the use of hair removal creams for roughly 5-7 days before your appointment, to minimize skin irritation.
