BIOEFFECT was born from a revolutionary achievement: the discovery of a way to bioengineer a plant-based human replica of Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF), one of the most important growth factors for the production of elastin, collagen, & healthy skin. Now, a decade after launching the flagship product, BIOEFFECT has created a full line of skincare products that use the power of biotechnology and Mother Nature to deliver healthier, hydrated and more youthful-looking skin.
BIOEFFECT was founded by three Icelandic scientists when they discovered, after over a decade of research, a way to bioengineer a plant-based human replica of EGF (Epidermal Growth Factor) in barley plants. EGF is one of the most important growth factors for skin, helping to boost production of collagen and elastin to maintain healthy, dense and youthful skin.

The flagship product, BIOEFFECT EGF Serum, was launched in Iceland in May 2010. In the years since BIOEFFECT has become a global success and is sold in premium stores worldwide. The product line has also grown and will continue to expand over the next couple of years.
EGF – THE SKIN CONDUCTOR
EGF stands for Epidermal Growth Factor. From birth until adulthood, our bodies manufacture copious amounts of proteins called growth factors that communicate with cells, sending messages to repair, rejuvenate, etc. We like to think of them as musical conductors instructing all the different cells to perform. EGF is one of the most important growth factors in our skin and helps to boost production of collagen and elastin to maintain healthy, dense and youthful skin. If we imagine a baby’s skin, it’s thick and plump and you just want to pinch it – that is because it is full of EGF. Once we reach maturity, production of growth factors decreases. As a result, cell turnover and repair slow, eventually affecting our appearance – skin starts to sag, and fine lines and wrinkles appear. In fact, skin density thins by one percent each year after we turn twenty. And that’s where topical application of EGF comes in. BIOEFFECT EGF products replenish the body’s own natural supply of EGF and rejuvenate skin cells, thus helping to slow the aging process.
But what is unique about BIOEFFECT EGF?
It is the world’s first plant-based EGF. EGF has previously either been grown in bacteria, which poses a risk of endotoxins, or extracted from human or animal cells, which presents ethical, moral, and legal issues. Producing EGF in barley is safer, purer, and more stable – which makes it the perfect choice for skincare.
Take the BIOEFFECT Greenhouse Tour
Take a journey behind the scenes of the high-tech, hydroponic greenhouse where BIOEFFECT grows barley plants all year round, thanks to sustainable geothermal energy. You will also discover how BIOEFFECT’s unique ingredient, barley-based EGF (Epidermal Growth Factor), becomes a reality through cutting-edge biotechnology. Hear how three scientists on a mission to advance medical research became pioneers in skincare. At the end of the tour you will get to take some BIOEFFECT magic home with you, as all guests receive a complimentary luxury sample set at the end of the tour.
