Laser Hair Removal

Smooth Skin is Always In!

How Does it Work?

Laser Hair Removal (LHR) involves the application of light beams deep into the skin which are absorbed by the melanin in the hair shaft and follicle. This light is converted to heat which damages the follicles and inhibits future hair growth.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

Because the laser only target hair in active stages of growth, you will need a series of treatments to achieve the best outcome. Hair type, colour, and texture (i.e. coarseness) can impact the number of sessions recommended. We typically schedule sessions for each treatment area 6-8 sessions apart.

Am I A Good Candidate?

Clients with darker hair are considered the best candidates, as the laser can better target the darker pigment. Blonde, grey, and strawberry-blonde hair may not absorb all of the laser light, but that doesn't rule out the treatment for those individuals entirely. This is will be discussed further in your consultation.

Your response to laser hair removal can be very different from the next. Some may require more treatments than others, and sometimes, laser hair removal can’t eliminate hair completely. If some hair does grow back, it’s usually thinner and finer than before the treatment.

Before Your Treatment

Prior to your appointment, please:

  • Avoid: Waxing or plucking hairs in the treatment area for 4-6 weeks before your treatment; hair follicles must be present to be treated.

  • Note: You can still shave. In fact, you’ll be asked to shave your treatment area a minimum of 24 hours before your scheduled appointment, as the laser will burn the hair and shaving minimizes potential of that heated hair to singe the surrounding skin.

  • Avoid: Sun tanning or self-tanning for a minimum of 4-6 weeks before your treatment, as the laser targets darker pigmentation in the skin and hair.

  • Consider: Depending on your pain tolerance, you can take a Tylenol 40 minutes prior to your treatment session.

What to Expect After Your Treatment

There may be some mild redness or bumps (Erythema) immediately after the treatment and there is small but potential risk of redness, swelling, bruising, blistering, or discolouration. Expect the following on the treated area:

  • Stubble: This is the dead follicles being eliminated from the skin, so shaving can maintain the smooth feel to the skin.

  • "Red Bumpies": The potential for ingrown hairs or "folliculitis" A.K.A. inflamed hair follicles, as the skin and hair are not used to the heat.

Nothing is expected to keep you from your daily activities. No recovery downtime is required, though it is advised that your avoid the following:

  • Saunas

  • Hot tubs and swimming pools

  • Excessive/overly strenuous workouts

  • Sun exposure for 4-6 weeks

Laser Hair Removal For Men

Laser Hair Removal for Men One of the fastest growing aesthetic procedures today is laser hair removal for men. In general, men have 3 times more hair in more places than women and shaving in all these areas can prove quite difficult and time consuming.

The most commonly treated areas for men are the

  • Neck

  • Belly

  • Chest

  • Shoulders

  • Stomach

  • Back

  • “Manzilian” area

And let’s clear up a misconception: Laser hair removal doesn’t have to leave you looking like a hairless fitness model (unless you want it to!).

Other Reasons Men Choose LHR Laser hair removal is increasingly popular for men for a variety of reasons, namely for:

  • Patients with recurrent folliculitis—inflamed hair follicles that can appear as small, white headed pimples. • Aesthetic reasons, whether to thin the hair or remove it entirely.

  • Hygienic concerns. While more body hair does not equate to less cleanliness, laser manscaping can alleviate the itchiness and irritation of bushy hair, as well as annoying ingrown hairs.

  • Hair loss or hair thinning.  At Medisthetics Wellness & Laser Clinic, 4% of patients choose to remove their head hair via laser, rather than dealing with sporadic balding, or having to shave daily.

  • Various athletic reasons, such as: male bodybuilders who don’t want any hair on their body cyclists, for aerodynamics
